If you have items like sofas, tables, chairs, cabinets, wardrobes, beds, fridges, freezers, cookers or washing machines which you don’t want anymore, donate them! If they’re in good condition and in full working order, some charities and community shops will come and pick them up for free.

And if you’re looking to buy some great quality, affordable furniture or electricals, visit one of the local community shops. They have new items available all the time so if you don’t find what you’re looking for the first time, make sure you visit again!

What you can buy or donate

Check with each charity for a full list of what they accept – different charities may need different things so if one can’t take your item, try another. They’ll usually take things like:

  • Sofas, settees, couches and armchairs
  • Dining tables and chairs
  • Cabinets
  • Tables
  • Wardrobes and drawers
  • Bedroom furniture
  • Small household furniture
  • Small electrical items
  • Mirrors
  • Bicycles
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Electric cookers
  • Mobility scooters
  • Wheelchairs and other mobility aids

By law, sofas and chairs with padding, fabric or leather must still have fire labels attached.  Charities won’t be able to collect any upholstered items which don’t have one.

Where you can buy or donate

All of these are local charities, supporting local people in Warrington.

Other ways to get rid of large items

Ask us to pick them up

Take them to a recycling centre

It’s free to take them to a community recycling centre, but before you go please check what items you can take to each centre, and whether you need a permit.

Give them away online

List them on a recycling website, app or facebook group.

Use a private company

There are other companies who can get rid of items for you. It’s up to you to make sure they are licensed, so check the register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers on the Environment Agency website. If someone dumps or fly-tips your items illegally, you could be prosecuted.

Get the retailer to dispose of it

If you’ve bought a new electrical item to replace an old one, the company you bought it from must provide a way for you to get rid of the old one, even if you didn’t buy it from them originally. Contact them directly and ask about their ‘take back’ service.
